Synopsis

This page is dedicated to the ideas that we have all had as a group for our final documentary. It will include any research we have undertaken, such as Youtube clips of news reports and links to relevant websites.

 Human Hamster

In our research we came across a man called Chris Todd, who had designed a life-size hamster wheel and was intending to cross the Irish Sea in it for charity. In October, he made his first attempt which failed 25 kilometres into the 106km journey due to the rudders in the "tredalo" disintegrating and the whole vessel collapsed and sank.

He has stated that he wishes to try again, after some major modifications to the design of the tredalo, but on the 28th November, he's holding a public Q&A for people to come and discuss why the first attempt failed and his preparations for the upcoming retry.

Initial Idea 1

Nuclear Power Documentary

The idea behind this Documentary is to explore the benefits and negatives of Nuclear Power. Through the help of EDF energy, we are able to understand the benefits of Nuclear Power. However although we have been enlightened to the beneficial points of Nuclear power, we have also researched the vast dangers nuclear power energy can produce.

A protest was recently held at the Hinkley Point Nuclear Site in Somerset by the Stop New Nuclear Alliance (SNNA), who were protesting against the use of Nuclear power. In this documentary, we get in touch with both the SNNA and EDF Energy, in order to get both the benefits and threats of using Nuclear energy as an energy source.

While we understand that this could be incredibly difficult for us, as it's such a large-scale issue, we believe that honing our attention to a particular protest group, such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) or the SNNA and following the members on a protest could be a good story.

Initial Idea 2

Aberfan Disaster

An Idea that was an interest to me was the Aberfan disaster in south east wales. It happened over 50 years ago, killing over 140 people and 116 of them were children. This was all caused by a pile of tips (the waste of the mining) were left at the top of the mountain. A lot of rain caused this pile to loosen and slide down the mountain side into a primary school. The idea of the documentary would be to visit the village maybe stay there for a few day and talk to some of the locals that experienced the tragic disaster to get a real idea of what happened 50 years ago and how it effects them today. We could also investigate into why this disaster happened and if anything could of been done to stop it.

 Initial Idea 3

Redhead Festivals

Around the world, there are various festivals that celebrate redheaded people. It started with a festival in Holland ("Roodharigendag") and has been adapted in Italy, Ireland, the US and soon the UK as well. This year, it was reported on the BBC, and a world record was broken for the most redheads being in one place for over fifteen minutes.

Our documentary would involve attending a festival, and interviewing the other attendees, discussing why they're there and any experiences they had due to the colour of their hair.

  Initial Idea 4

One idea I had for a documentary was an investigation into incest in the UK. I looked at news articles on the subject and found that there were many examples of prosecution for incest. I wondered about talking to convicted offenders of why they would do such an act and look at examples of people who are the outcome of incest. It could then take a scientific look at what the results of incest can have on their children. Having grown up in Devon i heard of many stories from students about a brother and sister who went to my school. They were said to one having a tail and the other webbed feet, rumoured to be because of inbreeding. i realise that this may just be the result of children's imagination but i still think it would be an interesting investigation.  The problem with this kind of documentary is trying to get people to get involved with it. At the end of the day who is going to admit to having sex with their relatives.

 Initial Idea 5
Cancer Research Documentary

Cancer is one of the most touching subjects when coming to illness. Cancer is a common disease that is very hard to get rid off, but possible through some processes.

The idea for this documentary is to take the viewers on an emotional journey of  three primaries who have in some way had cancer affect their lives. The few people I have found follow the story of, a family who lost a mother because of cancer, another being a surviver of cancer, and the third is still in the early stages of having cancer. All three stories show the past, present and future aspects of cancer. if going through with this documentary idea, we would follow the documentary mode of 'observational', so we can dis-attach our self from the documentary, allowing viewers to create emotional attachments. To guide the documentary we would use a female voice of god. We decided on female as females tend to deal with emotional subjects better, therefore creating more of an emotional barrier between the primary and the viewer.

 Initial Idea 6
Women's Rights in the Working Industry

Women's Rights is a controversial subject, that voices many opinions, even raising subjects of sexual discrimination. This documentary would show some of the true unfortunate events that still occur to women within the working industry. In the documentry we would want to reveal the modern working industry, were in some work places still carry some old morals on how women should be treated in the working industry. However, we face problems of finding primary's willing to discuss this topic with us.

Initial Idea 7

Tazers used in the Police Force

Raoul Moat

This issue deals with Tazer use in England, in this case it was considered that the Tazer wasn't used correctly and possibly cause Moat to shoot himself. This would have been too risky, and perhaps not interesting enough to consider,
