Lighting is mainly used for lighting up studios for shoots. The main lighting technique that is used is three-point lighting. This involves a key light, a fill light and a back light. The key light is the main light and is usually the strongest. This lights the subject on one side but leaves slight shadows on the other. That is where the fill light is needed. This is used to dim down the shadows created by the key light. Lastly is the back light which is there mainly to separate the background with the subject and therefore making the subject more three dimensional.
